Police violence is wide-spread problem – not only in the US but in other places as well. While I’ve read some pieces about body cameras, there was generally not a lot of discussions about measures we could take to curb it. I therefore found this Twitter thread about how to reduce police violence highly interesting. Some things they suggest:
- Demilitarization of the police
- Increase institutional accountability and cut the power of police unions to shield individuals from persecution
- Use predictive policing to police the police. I just love this one.
- Install alternatives to the police for some tasks. They suggested e.g. to have Mental Health Experts instead of police officers be the first-responders in some instances
They also have a (long) video summarizing their research.
